Who is the MBA advisor for accounting?
The current MBA advisor is Professor Brian Bushee. He can be contacted via e-mail at bushee@wharton.upenn.edu.What are the requirements for an Accounting Major in the MBA program?
The basic requirement is four full credit units beyond the required core courses (ACCT 620/621 and 622). One of these four credit units must be ACCT 742 (Problems in Financial Reporting). The remaining three credit units can consist of courses offered directly by the Accounting department, courses offered by other departments but cross-listed in Accounting, and/or one advanced study project. Courses taken to satisfy the accounting major cannot be taken on a pass/fail basis. The detailed requirements for a major in accounting, as well as the department's course offerings, can be found in the MBA Resource Guide. How do I get approval for an advanced study project?
First, you must talk to a faculty member in the Accounting department and develop a plan for a course of independent study that the faculty member is willing to supervise. Second, for this project to count toward the Accounting major, this project must be approved by the MBA advisor in Accounting. For more information, consult the MBA Resource Guide. How do I take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam?
It is unusual for MBA students to sit for the CPA Exam. Very few MBA students go on to become practicing accountants and the MBA program generally does not allow the student enough time to take all of the requisite coursework. However, a few students desire the certification and are willing to invest in the necessary hours of self-study to pass the exam. If you are interested in taking the exam, we have posted some additional information and important links at our CPA information site.
